LIQUIDROOM Tokyo, JAPAN ADV ¥4,000 / DOOR ¥4,500

This year Mono, Pelican, World’s End Girlfriend and LITE are playing at RaidWorld.

May 16 5:00P LIQUIDROOM Shibuya ¥4,5000

True story: I was supposed to go to RaidWorld last year until I got bedridden with food poisoning. Salmonella, to be exact. Let that be a lesson to you all to not eat raw chicken at an izakaya, no matter how good your Japanese friends tell you it is.

101A is an experimental 3-piece band from Toyko and the only way I can describe their sound is something that takes its influence from post-rock and shoegaze but goes from there to craft their own distinct sound.

Perhaps the biggest announcement is that they will be playing at Kodama ’09 in Nagano this summer. Kodama is a rather large outdoor 2-day indie festival held in Nagano representing a lot of genres. Tickets are ¥4,000. Parking is ¥2,000, but apparently to set up camp is free. 101A will be playing on the first day of the event which is June 6th.

I had the pleasure of seeing Osaka’s Ha-Gakure play with envy last March and I was totally blown away. Actually, I don’t know how to define the style of music these four talented guys play. I’m not one to pigeonhole bands into strict categories, but for the purpose of tagging this post, I find myself coming up short. Their instrumentation is not too far removed from post-rock, but their vocalist (or MC as the band defines his role as), Yasuhide Takayama, raps(?) over the band. Yeah, I know that sounds weird. Perhaps borderline unpleasant. Honestly, my words cannot do this band justice so just go to their myspace. I highly recommend this band, especially to fans of the recent split releases from envy.

The reclusive minimalist midoriyama is playing a single show in June after having played 5 shows in 4 months (Jan-Apr) here and there. midoriyama still hasn’t put out anything new since 2005, but here’s to hoping that that might change this year.

The show is really cheap so go out and see this amazing one-man, one-guitar band.

Tokyo’s Presence of Soul is playing a few shows in eastern Japan coming up pretty soon. They are a part of the swelling post-rock movement going on in Japan right now but their vocals really put them out from the rest. Yuki and her haunting vocals fit perfectly against the distorted soundscapes crafted by no less than seven effect pedals to make this incredibly beautiful musical experience. It’s something that must be experienced in person, so go check them out.

Water Fai is a self-described psychedelic pop band from Osaka consisting of mostly women;  although, they could easily be placed amongst the other bands of the Japanese post-rock movement.  That’s not to say that they don’t stand out from their fellow countrymen, as their 2008 debut, entitled Girls in the White Dream, was a very solid album. Their beautiful harmonized vocals conjure memories of Texas Pandaa’s One Gleam After the Shadow while their instrumentation is emotional and powerful.  Do check them out as they make their way around Japan.
