Shugo Tokumaru

Shugo Tokumaru

So how did the experimental folk singer-songwriter Shugo Tokumaru sell out all of May but not April or June? Well I don’t know, maybe the May shows are cheaper. I can’t say I’m too surprised, though. After all, his 2008 release, Exit, was on multiple “top albums of 2008” lists. Deservedly so, I might add. Catch these shows before they get sold out too!

Hideki Kaji makes happy music. And despite my love for Japan’s hardcore/powerviolence scene, I’m prone to listen to some indie pop from time to time. That’s why I’m happy to announce that Mr. Kaji is playing some shows and releasing a new e.p. pretty soon. His 1998 album Tea placed at the #100 spot on Rolling Stone Japan’s top 100 Greatest Japanese Rock Albums so start there if you have yet to listen to his music. This Swedish pop influenced songwriter is putting out Blue Boys Don’t Cry on May 20th and is going on a tour in July to promote it, so get out and catch a show.

Tokyo’s genre bending School Food Punishment will release their new single called Futuristic Imagination on May 27th for ¥1,223. For about ¥200 more, you can purchase the single with some sort of DVD included. I don’t know what will be on the DVD, but I’m guessing it has something to do with the anime 東のエデン (Eden of the East),  as the song is used as its ending theme.

Anime stuff aside, School Food Punishment has four shows planned, although most of them are (not surprisingly) in Tokyo.
