Ring a Ding Dong

File this under “guilty pleasures”. I just went out and got my copy of Kaela’s new single. This isn’t the kind of blog that beacons a review from such a release, so there won’t be one (not very underground, is she?). I just thought I’d share this bit of information with all of you. Well then, until the next update!

CUBISMO GRAFICO FIVE will be releasing their 4th album “Double Dozen” on July 7th and will play a total a three shows in Japan (Osaka, Nagoya, Toyko) to promote it. They will team up with math/space/science rockers avengers in sci-fi for the Osaka and Nagoya shows.

They are doing it AGAIN! SCLL is releasing 2, two, TWO albums in a single year! “VIEW” was excellent, but unfortunately it was released at a time when this blog was on hiatus so there was no official review written about it. Bummer, I know. “VIEW” was released on April 21st and was preceded by the single “dreamer”. Yes, that’s right, SCLL has a total of three releases this year! Any way, an official review will be posted once it gets released. For now, get yourselves a copy of dreamer and VIEW and wait until forest… gets released.

“forest at the head of a river” will be released on June 23rd on felicity records.

Hey! I’m still alive and I’m still writing this blog. I’ve got some good news for you all. I’m heading back to Japan in a few days and I hope that will allow me to interview up and coming bands and discover new acts to report to you. Right now I have dates for キノコホテル/kinocohotel from Tokyo. These four hot chicks play a unique blend of genres that is equal parts 60s psychedelic and 60s garage rock. I’m personally excited to go see them and I am definitely going to their January 12th show. Their first album, entitled マリアンヌの憂鬱, will be released on February 3rd, so get yourself a copy and support these girls!

So tomorrow I’m going to California and again, I must apologize for the lack of updates, but before I go I wanted to at least leave you all with something.

Kimura Kaela’s new album entitled HOCUS POCUS will be released on the 24th of June.

Now I understand if you’re confused as to why I’m updating about a jpop idol on a blog about underground music, but I now have less than four hours to sleep and wake up and get ready for my flight and I have nothing else to write about so just bear with me on this post. Besides, she’s my guilty pleasure.

This year Mono, Pelican, World’s End Girlfriend and LITE are playing at RaidWorld.

May 16 5:00P LIQUIDROOM Shibuya ¥4,5000

True story: I was supposed to go to RaidWorld last year until I got bedridden with food poisoning. Salmonella, to be exact. Let that be a lesson to you all to not eat raw chicken at an izakaya, no matter how good your Japanese friends tell you it is.

Hideki Kaji makes happy music. And despite my love for Japan’s hardcore/powerviolence scene, I’m prone to listen to some indie pop from time to time. That’s why I’m happy to announce that Mr. Kaji is playing some shows and releasing a new e.p. pretty soon. His 1998 album Tea placed at the #100 spot on Rolling Stone Japan’s top 100 Greatest Japanese Rock Albums so start there if you have yet to listen to his music. This Swedish pop influenced songwriter is putting out Blue Boys Don’t Cry on May 20th and is going on a tour in July to promote it, so get out and catch a show.

Tokyo’s genre bending School Food Punishment will release their new single called Futuristic Imagination on May 27th for ¥1,223. For about ¥200 more, you can purchase the single with some sort of DVD included. I don’t know what will be on the DVD, but I’m guessing it has something to do with the anime 東のエデン (Eden of the East),  as the song is used as its ending theme.

Anime stuff aside, School Food Punishment has four shows planned, although most of them are (not surprisingly) in Tokyo.

I haven’t kept up with those guys in a while, but it seems they have released a new EP 2 months ago with three brand-new tracks.

They are a local band from Osaka and definitely have a shot at getting big, at least in my opinion.

If you like a genre mix between alternative and screamo with catchy hooks and an amazing energy check those guys out at one their concerts!

For some of their audio and concert dates, check out their myspace!!!
